The Music Theory Proficiency Examination is taken as one of two options to validate the academic competency requirement in the area of music theory for partially fulfilling Standard I Professional Preparation. The examination consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. A score of 75% or higher is a Pass.

The Music History/Literature Proficiency Examination is taken as one of two options to validate the academic competency requirement in the area of music history/literature for partially fulfilling Standard I Professional Preparation. The examination consists of 100 multiple-choice questions. A score of 75% or higher is a Pass.

PEDAGOGY/TEACHER EDUCATION
The Pedagogy/Teacher Education Proficiency Examinations are specifically designed for each of the twenty-one performance areas in which MTNA Professional Certification is offered: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, euphonium, tuba, harp, percussion, violin, viola, violoncello, double bass, guitar, organ, piano and voice. This examination is taken as one of two options to validate the academic competency requirement in the area of pedagogy/teacher education for partially fulfilling Standard I Professional Preparation. It contains 75 multiple-choice questions. While some of the questions are generic to the twenty-one performance areas, others pertain to the performance area(s) in which the candidate is making application for MTNA Professional Certification. A score of 75% or higher is a Pass.
These examinations are administered on specific dates at designated testing sites.
